Alexander Technique in Piano Lessons

The Integrated Pianist Method

Traditional piano method studies in specific movements of fingers and arm.  Alexander Technique looks at the coordinated use of the whole person in thought and action.  To achieve full potential at the instrument both issues must be addressed. Since all musical expressions must be expressed through the performer, the most comprehensive course of piano study integrates pianistic technique with Alexander Technique.  The Integrated Pianist Method is an exciting new evolution that transcends both traditional pedagogues.

The Alexander Technique is a study of balance through the body leading to greater ease and comfort when playing.  To access a positive fundamental coordination, the teacher uses his hands to guide the pupil through movements – both at and away from the instrument.  A method of thinking is structured to help the student maintain this coordination independently.

When combined with an effective skill at the piano, Alexander Technique paves the way for freedom in technical and expression. Unlike regular Alexander Technique lessons, the teaching of coordination and movement is integrated into the learning of pianistic skills, repertoire, theory and improvisation. Students at any level can benefit from the Integrated Pianist Method.
