Group Alexander Technique Workshops. Suitable for beginners or experienced students. In-studio groups are 3 - 6 participants, hosted sessions may have larger class sizes. Bookings essential. Explore Alexander Technique principles and application in interactive group class/workshop. Some sessions are themed especially for musicians or other special interest.

Short course in pain management and injury prevention for musicians

For musicians who are dealing with, or wish to avoid issues like:

  • RSI, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, tendonitis

  • back pain, neck pain, wrist pain

  • headache, migraine

  • excess tension

  • focal dystonia

5 x 90 minute sessions, Wednesdays at 7:45pm
1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th May 2019

Full course fees:

$220 if paid by 1st March,
$250 if paid by 1st April, otherwise $280

This course is run to assist musicians struggling with injury or pain when practicing or performing. Also for those who wish to cultivate positive practices for injury prevention and comfort in playing.

It is open to musicians of any instrument, age, background or level of experience.

The content will mostly be drawn from principles of Alexander Technique and look at how they are relevant to a musician’s practice.

Throughout the course, musicians will:

  • Deepen understanding of how to meet the demands of performance

  • Improve on body mapping

  • Learn to modify patterns of posture and movement which may be non-productive

  • Apply a practical framework for promoting healthy coordination

  • Develop skills to independently apply what they have learnt in the sessions

The course will be customised to suit the needs of the individuals who attend.

There is a piano in the studio, other instrumentalists are asked to bring their instruments.

About the presenter

Jeremy Woolhouse is a qualified Alexander Technique Teacher and music graduate of the VCA. As a student and professional performer, he has used Alexander Technique to overcome RSI in wrists and shoulder, back pain and hypertension. Jeremy also draws on decades of piano teaching and Alexander Technique teaching experience to present a method for coordinating the whole performer and performance.

 

5 week short course: Performance confidence for musicians

For musicians dealing with performance anxiety, stage fright, or nerves,
or for those who simply wish to improve on confidence in performance.

5 x 90 minute sessions, Wednesdays at 7:45pm

Performance confidence is not just psychological - it is a whole body-mind state. This course draws on principles of Alexander Technique to bring the body and mind into coordination for performance. Participants will learn panic prevention and management strategies as well as practice techniques to cultivate confidence. Long term performance anxiety is associated with physical and mental habits. Participants will look at how this nervous energy can be redirected into performance.

About the presenter:

Jeremy Woolhouse became a confident performer through a long period of self development supported by Alexander Technique, Zen meditation and contemporary psychology. He cites this development as central to his capacity for presenting engaging and fulfilling public performance. Jeremy’s workshops draw on his personal journey, his experience in professional performance, teaching of music and of Alexander Technique.

Alexander Technique is a powerful tool helping musicians find ease and confidence in performance.   

It has helped instrumentalists and vocalists address issues with tendonitis, carpal tunnel and other RSI, back and neck pain, breathing and performance anxiety.  

Alexander Technique creates optimal conditions for instrumental technique to flourish and musicality to be expressed.

Small group workshops offer some individual attention, in the context of group exploration of Alexander Technique as it applies to music.

Participants will gain understanding of the principles of Alexander Technique, experience guided procedures, and develop a framework for continued exploration and practice independently.

Minimum numbers apply.  Venue: Poise Alexander Technique Glen Iris.

Small groups sessions are a budget way to get input from an Alexander Technique teacher.  The small group size offers the opportunity for individual attention and group exploration of Alexander Technique. 

The principles developed by FM Alexander are the essence of the lessons.  Taking input from the group’s interest on the day, we will be look at how The Technique can be integrated with daily or specialist activities, and explore ways of deepening our practice of Alexander Technique.

Newcomers to Alexander Technique are welcome.  As well as being a wonderful personal practice for experienced students, this is also an opportunity for introducing The Technique to friends and family.
